It’s Back Awareness week and while that might sound a bit formal, it’s actually a perfect time to kick back, relax, and think about our backs. Having experienced a painful shoulder for over a week now, caused by being hunched over my laptop working from bed, I only know too well how not looking after ourselves can lead to some serious pain!
Why Focus on Our Backs?
Let’s face it: back pain is a common nuisance that many of us deal with at some point. Whether it’s hunching over a computer, lifting something the wrong way, or just the daily grind of life, our backs can really take a beating. Back Awareness week is all about raising awareness and reminding ourselves how to treat our backs right and look after ourselves.
Simple Tips for a Happy Back
Here are a few easy, no-stress tips to keep your back feeling great:
Check Your Posture: It’s as simple as that! Try to sit up straight and avoid slumping. If you catch yourself hunched over, just straighten up. Your back will thank you!
Set up a workstation: Making sure you have a suitable chair, desk set at the correct height can help support our backs.
Get Moving: A little movement goes a long way. Whether it’s a walk around the block, some gentle stretches, or even a fun dance party in your living room, just get that body moving.
Lift Smart: When you need to pick something up, remember to bend your knees and lift with your legs. Your back will appreciate the extra care.
Take Breaks: If you’re sitting for long periods, stand up, stretch, and give your back a break. A little movement can help relieve tension.
Listen to Your Body: If you feel pain, don’t ignore it. Give yourself some time to rest or consult a professional such as a physiotherapist or an Osteopath to seek advice and support if it doesn’t go away.

Join a Yoga Class: Yoga is fantastic for flexibility and strengthening your back. Plus, it’s a great way to relax and unwind!
